Abstract: In image acquisition and transmission the quality of the image is newlinedegraded by channel noise and faults in image sensing systems Noise in newlineimages are categorized into additive white Gaussian noise uniform noise newlineimpulse noise signal dependent noise and multiplicative speckle noise There newlineare many linear filtering techniques proposed by researchers for removal of newlinenoise in images The performance of linear filters is not good if the noise is newlinenot additive Linear filters are also not effective for non Gaussian noise Non newlinelinear digital filters have been successfully employed where linear filters newlinefailed There are various types of non linear filters namely order statistic newlinefilters morphological filters homomorphic filters and polynomial filters newlineThey are optimized for a specific type of noise and for a specific type of newlinesignal or image Synthetic Aperture Radar SAR signals are often corrupted newlineby speckle noise which is multiplicative in nature newline newline
