Abstract: The main objective of power system is to deliver uninterrupted power supply to the cusumers. Like any other system, faults may occur in power system too. In such a situation, it is necessary that a proper restoration process be applied as soon as possible after the occurances of the fault. In order to satisfy the affords statement the fault analysis process shoud be fast and accurate. When a fault occurs, restoration of power supply is made possible after the maintenance crew finishes the repairs of the damage caused by the fault. This thesis is focused mainly on fault classification and location for different configurations of the transmission line and distribution line. Various fault classification and location approaches based on computational intelligence method in combination with signal processing technique have been investigated. In this thesis a fast and accurate hybrid computational intelligence based fault classification and location method in transmission line and distribution line has been proposed, which reduces the estimation error substantially and relies on a single cycle of post fault current or voltage signal. The impact of the presence of thyristors controlled series capacitor and distributed generation based wind farm has also been taken into consideration. The proposed fault classification and location method uses properly sampled values of the faulty current or voltage signal from the relaying end of the transmission and distribution line. newline
