Abstract: Steam turbine generator set is an important component of the thermal power plants to convert heat energy of steam into electrical energy through mechanical work. Mechanical equipments in the modern industrial power plant are developing with characteristics such as automation and maximization of power output, therefore the mechanical structure is more and more complex. The whole production will be interrupted, if any mechanical fault is appeared. The monitoring and effective fault diagnosis of the steam turbine unit is important measure to guarantee the safe and normal operation of turbo-generator unit. The most commonly steam turbine faults are vibration problems due to steam-induced vibration, rotor imbalance, permanent rotor bow, rotor crack, erosion and corrosion of rotor blade, misalignment of rotor shaft etc. newlineExtensive literature survey has been made for understanding reliability analysis and effective fault diagnosis of steam turbine. The reliability of power plant is related to the possibility of giving electricity efficiently and more economical with a reasonable quality assurance of continuity. A modern power plant system can divide into generation, transmission and distribution functional areas. The system may consider independently or in combinations of all three functional areas. This work is limited to the evaluation of the generation reliability. The main aim is to develop a method to improve the reliability of the steam turbine power plant. In this respect, reliability centered maintenance concepts have utilized as a guideline for ranking the maintenance policy priorities of the critical components of steam turbine. . newlineThe widely used and effective method for fault detection and diagnosis of rotating machines is vibration analysis. Attempts have been made in the literatures towards fault diagnosis, through vibration measurement, signal processing, feature extraction and fault identification.
