Abstract: The doctoral thesis brings to light the geographical variations in the nature and extent of natural resource degradation resulted by the intensification of agriculture after the implementation of Green Revolution in mid 1960 s in the Trans-Gangetic Region. The study finds that during 1985-2011, the level of agricultural development in the Region has deteriorated and the disparities have increased. The Kandi belt in the north-east along with south-eastern and south-central districts have witnessed improvement in level of agricultural development while western and east-central districts have recorded decline. Many of the government policies and programmes implemented for natural resource conservation in the Region have been found to be lacking in adoption by individual farmers.
