Abstract: this dissertation aims to create awareness of the innovative practices of tourism in Kashmir but specifically focus on development of adventure tourism in Kashmir by seeking the perception of the Small and medium sized enterprises. A review on relevant literature is undertaken on the dimensions of innovation and then focus is turned on the relationship between the innovation and tourism development practices (special focus on niche products that is adventure tourism). In order to achieve objectives of the study a questionnaire-based field survey was conducted to gather data from tourism SMEs offering adventure tourism in the Kashmir region of Jammu and Kashmir. A self-structured questionnaire was developed by the researcher from the literature on degree and types of innovation, and the characteristics of innovativeness. Questionnaires were distributed and gathered by hand in order to optimize response. A total of 52 Small and medium sized enterprises offering adventure tourism were included in the study, responses of which were analyzed by using SPSS. Based on the research findings, the study explores how the adventure tour operators are using different innovative techniques to create a right environment for product development (development of adventure tourism) to take place. However, it was proclaimed that the tourism SMEs are more focused in developing adventure activities like trekking and Skiing and are less focused in developing other adventure activities. Although the tourism sectors plays an important role for the economic development of the Kashmir region, but till date there has been no scientific contribution available from the state of Jammu and Kashmir on the subject of innovation as far as supporting innovation for tourism development (particularly the development of niche products) through SMEs is concerned. Therefore, this study makes an important contribution by profiling innovation, according to type, and on innovative practices of tourism SMEs in the development of adventure tourism in Kashmir
