Abstract: Fuzzy systems are known for their capabilities to handle ambiguous or vague concepts of human perception for complex systems problems, where it is extremely difficult to describe the system models mathematically. Design of fuzzy model or fuzzy model identification is the task of finding the parameters of fuzzy model so as to get the desired behavior. Two principally different approaches are used for the design of fuzzy models: heuristic-based design and model-based design. In the first approach, the design is constructed from the knowledge acquired from the expert, while in the second, the input-output data is used for building model. newlineOne of the most important considerations in designing any fuzzy system is the generation of fuzzy rules. In most of the existing applications, the experts in the area generate the fuzzy rules by taking all the possible input combinations for rule formation. This thesis proposes a very simple and convenient technique viz. Exhaustive Search Technique which can be used to reduce the existing rule-base of a fuzzy system but without compromising with the performance. Hardware and processing time savings resulting from the rule reduction achieved through this technique are also presented. Another approach for removing some fuzzy rules from the existing rule-base through state reduction is also introduced in this thesis. newlineThe thesis proposes a framework for identifying optimal fuzzy models from the data through the use of Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) algorithm. newline...
