Abstract: Condensation of carbonyl compounds with primary amines is one of newlinethe traditional reactions in chemistry, leading to the formation of schiff base newlinecompounds. Recently a great deal of interest has developed in the synthesis newlineand characterization of transition metal complexes containing schiff bases as newlineligands due to their varied biological applications such as antibacterial, newlineantifungal and anticancer activities. newlineInfectious diseases posed by the emerging antibiotic-resistant newlinemicrobes are a serious problem and a grave threat to the world community. newlineGenerally, both gram-positive and gram-negative bacterial strains pose a newlinemajor health challenge. Growing resistance of microbes for existing newlineantimicrobial agents calls for exploring new areas of research to identify newlinemethods, to combat emerging infections, to kill the microorganisms and to newlineinhibit their growth. newlineWith these facts in mind, schiff base were synthesized using ecofriendly, newlinefood grade aldehyde such as melonal which is present in newlinewatermelon. Melonal is a relatively unexplored ingredient in the field of coordination newlinechemistry with excellent sensory properties. newlineThe schiff base compounds [(N-(2,6-dimethylhept-5-enylidine) benzene newlineamine] (L1), [4-chloro-N-(2,6-dimethylhept-5-enylidine) benzeneamine] (L2) newlineand [4-fluoro-N-(2,6-dimethylhept-5-enylidine) benzene amine] (L3) were newlineprepared by the condensation of 2,6-dimethyl-5-heptenaldehyde,commonly newlineknown as melonal with amines such as aniline/ chloroaniline/ fluoroaniline newlinerespectively in 1:1 molar ratio and they were characterized using nuclear newlinemagnetic resonance spectroscopy(1H NMR), gas chromatography-mass newlinespectrometry (GC-MS). newlineComplexes derived from L1, L2, L3 with the transition metals Cu(II), newlineNi(II), Co(II), Cr(III) and inner transition metal Sm(III)were characterized using newlineviii newlinematrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization-time-of-flight mass spectrometry newline(MALDI-TOF), Energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy(EDX) and molar newlineconductivity measurements. newlineThe schiff bases and metal complexes synthesized were thoroughly newlinecharacteriz
