Abstract: The thesis presents the study of an optimal reserve inventory between machines when the breakdown time and repair time are random variables and a reserve inventory model is obtained on certain circumstances. The factors which are important for this system modeling are holding cost, idle cost, consumption rate, failure behavior and repair behavior. Of these factors, failure behavior and repair behavior are foremost important and are studied here using different models and techniques. newlineNormally, a random variable will follow a single distribution throughout its domain, but in certain occasions, it may follow two or more distributions. A random variable may have a change of distribution after a particular value called the truncation point / change point. This event is called the change of distribution property of the random variable. So, a distribution which incorporates the two distributions viz., prior to the truncation point and after the truncation point is developed. Moreover, the breakdown time random variable is considered when it undergoes change of distribution property and repair time random variable is considered as distributions like exponential, uniform, univariate generalized distribution etc., and a mathematical model for optimal reserve inventory is obtained. The concept of change of distributions, order statistics and SCBZ property are used for breakdown time / repair time random variables and models for optimal reserve inventory are obtained. Numerical illustrations are provided by varying holding cost / idle cost / consumption rate etc. newlineA production process which requires two kinds of raw materials is considered and the reserves of these raw materials are kept separately and used whenever there is a break in the regular supply. On each occasion there is a depletion of stock for each of the raw materials and when it reaches a particular level called critical level / threshold level, reorder is made to prevent the shutdown of the production process.
