Abstract: The thesis focuses on the synthesis of novel bismuth containing compounds, their crystal structure analysis by powder and single crystal X-ray diffraction, and the investigation of their potential applications. Among the mixed metal oxides, bismuth containing compounds find numerous applications ranging from photocatalysis, ionic conductivity, as yellow pigments and as ferroelectrics, owing to the remarkable physical properties exhibited by bismuth such as, the variable oxidation states, high coordination ability, the polarizability and the stereochemical nature of the lone pair. The designing of new materials has been carried out either by exploratory synthesis or by the approach of synthesizing new structural variants by suitable metal ion substitutions in the already known structures. The present thesis describes the outcome of the investigation on the synthesis of Bi3+ containing mixed metal oxides and their structural and photocatalytic applications. Given below is the brief summary of the work presented in the thesis. Chapter 1 deals with the literature description of the various structural types adopted by the bismuth containing oxides, the methods that are commonly employed for their synthesis, their related properties and associated applications. A general introduction of the structure and properties of the metal oxides especially that of bismuth, have been described. Some common structural types that have been discussed include fluorite, perovskite, layered perovskite, Aurivillius, columnar, scheelite, and ilmenite. Relevant details based on the applications such as photocatalysis, ionic conductivity and ferroelectricity have been introduced in this chapter. In addition, the different methods that are commonly being employed for the synthesis of these oxides have also been briefly described. In Chapter 2, the principles of the various analytical tools employed for characterizing the synthesized solids are summarized.
