Abstract: newline A lot of research work has been reported in the past, concentrating in the area of design of performance parameters and operating parameters of journal bearing. Most of the literature survey related to these parameters has been studied. Due to the broad area of this research some parameters and their interpretations were analyzed. In the present thesis the literature survey has been divided into eleven categories of survey based on the above parameters. The parameters are explained in detail one by one. These parameters are the basis of problem formulation and are a selection of the present study. Some of the researchers have worked on finite element analysis, analytical solution, simulation and modeling. Others have done experimental investigation and compared their results with theoretical standard results. newlineThis study deals with the design of computer aided analysis of pressure development and attitude angle. These are the bearing design parameters of hydrodynamic journal bearing. The Matlab software tool is adopted for the design analysis purpose. The general Reynolds equation is solved by using Finite Difference method with Successive over Relaxation (SOR) technique for convergence. Further, one of the design parameters, i.e. altitude angle is calculated. The results obtained are compared with standard references available. The result matches with standard reference with maximum error up to 4.39%. A journal bearing is a very useful rotatory machine component used to support the load and reduce the friction between rotating parts. The pressure generated in the bearing depends on the shaft eccentricity, the angular velocity, clearance and the bearing dimensions. Bearing parameters may be divided into two groups of variables on the basis of which journal bearings are designed. These are classified as operating parameters and performance parameters.
